CHAPTER 1: INSIDE THE MIND Balzar 038-Jack, leapt aside as a beam of plasma burned its way through the rock that he had been crouching behind just a moment before. He saw a blur of motion move toward the blue tull (a winged creature that never flew very high that had shockers in the place of hands) which had fired at Jack. The tull was killed as Balzar 047-Lisa, put a bullet in its head. Balzar 124-Ron and Balzar 016-Bill emerged from the shadows behind a plasma turret which they had secured. Balzar 043-Carl called from a tree above Blue Team's heads, "Enemy contacts approaching from the south. Looks like they're mostly made up of lenches and chars. Also Chief," Carl said to Jack on a private COMM channel. "There is a countess' ship about two kilometers westward of our position." Jack turned to Ron and Will, "One of you get on that turret, the other's job is to cover his six." He keyed Lisa's COMM channel. "Get back to the dropship. Stand by for immediate extraction." "Yes, sir." "Carl, take Gina with you to the countess' ship. I'll stand by for a full report." Balzar 100-Giona silently stalked the shadows, sticking close to Carl. She put up a good argument for beitg the best fighters among all the Balzars. She was stealthy, well disciplined, and the best sniper the corps had ever seen. Ron, who was crouched next to the plasma turret, picked up a transmission from Red Team that was filled with static. "This i.... Team leader. Situation is hot...extraction...someone get Jessica outta there." Then there was nothing but static. Ron reported what he had heard to Jack. "We gotta get Red Team out of there." Jack said on Red Team's COMM channel. "New plan," he paused as Will fired at a couple of approaching lenches. "Ron, you'll go with Lisa to extract Red Team," Jack continued. "Me and Will are going to defend this position against hostiles. Any questions?" "No sir," they replied in unison and fell out. Jack keyed a private COMM channel with Lisa. "Pick up Ron at my position. Then move to extract Red Team." "What about the rest of our team?" she asked him. "Don't worry. I've got a plan." He snapped off the channel.
